‘Why we joined the union’

Howard Alper

Howard AlperI first joined Local 802 when doing some recording work for Corey Glover on his LaFace recording “Hymns.” It was my first experience with high-level professional music work. After a few years, I let my membership lapse. I decided to re-join Local 802 because I’ve had several experiences over the past few years that have made me feel a desire and need for solidarity with my fellow musicians. I’ve spent the better part of the last 20 years as a freelance drummer in NYC, playing with rock, R&B, country and electronica bands as well as playing with singer/songwriters and dancers and also for Off Broadway shows. I enjoy studio work as well as live performance. My goal is to continue working with the artists I’ve collaborated with and to look for more opportunities in theatre productions. I have many acts that I am proud to be associated with. One is the alt-rock and soul band California King. We recently played at BAMCafe in Brooklyn. Another project is the Soulfolk Experience, which represented Brooklyn in the 2011 WNYC Battle of the Boroughs. My principal instruments are acoustic and electronic drum set and percussion.
