‘Why we joined the union’

Volume 116, No. 6June, 2016

Gwen Laster

Gwen LasterI first joined Local 802 to sub on Broadway shows and have access to the various workshops, programs and opportunities offered. After a hiatus of subbing, I rejoined the union to begin subbing on “The King and I” and play other union gigs. My musical goal is to continue developing and expanding my skills as a performer, composer and educator of jazz, classical, soul and global music. I want to be consistently working in progressive and intuitive environments with like-minded musicians and artists. I plan to lead a way-cool, forward-thinking music education program inclusive of all young musicians from all backgrounds, teaching leadership, responsibility and discipline through music. I recently performed with Nona Hendryx in a project called “Parallel Lives: Billie Holiday and Edith Piaf.” It was the most powerful concept I’ve ever witnessed from an artist. It included an amazingly talented group of women. Music is especially important to me because I love being surrounded by the creative community. I love the power of good music and the inspiration it gives me to express and release my thoughts. My principal instrument is violin.
