Some people think unions are an anachronism, but Local 802 is anything but that. It is an organization that continues to thrive and support a large community of musicians. I want to be part of an organization that is so vital. As an active chamber music French hornist and piano accompanist, I want to expand my involvement in the music industry. I see a perfect opportunity by being a union member. Local 802 is a strong organization that backs its members, giving them opportunities under full protection. I’ve subbed on Broadway, I’m a full member of two performing woodwind quintets, I’ve participated in the Utah Summer Festival Opera Orchestra and I’ve toured around the world. These opportunities would have not been possible without networking with other union members. In today’s economic and cultural climate, the many challenges of being a freelancer have never been greater. Local 802’s support will continue to be a critical component that allows musicians to remain adaptable to any situation and to the continual challenges and stimulation that music brings to our lives. Being a part of Local 802 will hopefully expand my opportunities in many directions.
