CONCERT DEPARTMENT
Symphonic, Opera, Ballet and Chamber Engagements
BACK TO DEPARTMENTS MAIN MENU
We are Local 802's Concert Department, supervised by Financial Vice-President Jay
Bumenthal, which negotiates and administers over 60 collective bargaining agreements for live performances.
These agreements cover musicians performing in ensembles
varying in size from chamber ensembles to full symphonic
orchestras in various venues from small theatres to Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.
If you visit the department you can receive scale sheets for the areas noted above and lists of contractors (sometimes called personnel managers) who engage musicians throughout the city. The staff of this department handle the details of filing contracts, including assuring that the musicians who play union engagements receive credit for pension and health contributions. If you have a question about a check you have received for a union engagement, the Concert Department staff can assist you - whether that means explaining how the scale is calculated or filing a grievance if you have not received proper payment.
The most important activity of the department is the negotiation of agreements with employers. This is done through a system of committees elected by rank-and-file musicians on the job, who help us decide what proposals will be made in negotiations. The department also makes sure that grant application and archival recordings are protected against misuse by obtaining agreements which govern their production and use.
If you find yourself working under a collective bargaining agreement negotiated by the Concert Department, consider becoming involved in the process by serving on a committee. If most or all of your work is still nonunion, call the Organizing Department; they will try to help you to make your jobs union so that you can enjoy improved conditions and pension and health benefits. Remember, all calls are confidential.
The Concert Department is located on the 4th floor of Local 802's offices.
