MUSIC PREPARATION DEPARTMENT

BACK TO DEPARTMENTS MAIN MENU

The Local 802 Music Preparation Department serves members who perform services as arrangers, orchestrators, copyists, transcribers and librarians. The department is responsible for administering contracts for all local work including the fields of live performance (concerts, symphonic, etc.), Broadway and off-Broadway, among others. The department also assists the Recording Department to ensure that music preparation musicians are included on national contracts (such as film, recording and TV) and receive new-use and re-use payments when they are due. Further, the department assists in negotiating music preparation scales, working conditions and benefits in all local agreements. Summary scale sheets for orchestration and copying as well as complete scales work rules and working conditions are available to members upon request.

Members are responsible for filing a music preparation contract with the department before beginning work on a job. In addition, wages and benefits must be billed to the employer using the Local 802 Music Preparation Invoice. Contract blanks and invoices are available from the department, as is any assistance you may need in filling them out.

The Music Preparation Department strives to assist members in all aspects of their work. One of the most valuable tools to the union in accomplishing this is the rank-and-file committee. Two rank-and-file committees meet regularly to discuss issues that are important to members and to share information and camaraderie. Committee members serve as consultants to union negotiators before and during negotiations. The committee advises the union on an ongoing basis about what is happening in the field and how we can better serve our members. The union encourages your active participation in either the Arrangers & Orchestrators Committee or the Music Copyists Committee as the most effective way for you to have a voice in how the union represents you at the bargaining table and in the workplace.

Although it is a good idea to make an appointment for assistance with a specific problem, members are encouraged to call or come into the office at any time to chat about what you're doing, pick up scale sheets, look for advice or exchange information.

The Music Preparation Department is located on the 5th Floor of Local 802's offices.
