OFFICE OF PUBLIC RELATIONS AND POLITICAL ACTION

BACK TO DEPARTMENTS MAIN MENU

Local 802's Office of Public Relations and Political Action is responsible for the union's public presence, both in the media and within the broad labor-community movement in which the union exists. Over the years Local 802 has developed and maintains a productive relationship with much of the New York-area media. The department is responsible for news releases and press conferences on issues of concern to the union and its members.

This department also functions as the political action center of Local 802, coordinating the union's activities on legislative issues, on political action and our participation in labor and community coalitions. The department is also responsible for the production of Allegro, the official journal of Local 802, and of Local 802's membership directory.

Allegro

Allegro is the official journal of Local 802. It is published monthly, except for a combined July-August issue. In it you will find news of interest to musicians - both as members of Local 802, and as part of the broader labor movement and community. Every member receives a subscription. Under our bylaws, this serves as legal notice to members of a wide range of matters: the dates of membership meetings; any bylaw resolutions to be considered at those meetings; Executive Board minutes; wage scales and working conditions of newly negotiated collective bargaining agreements; listings of new and readmitted members and of concerts performed with support from the Music Performance Funds, and much more.

Allegro not only reports policy decisions - it provides avenues for members to help shape those decisions. The Musicians' Voice, which prints letters on any topic members wish to raise, has been the site of many heated debates. Rank-and-file musicians also contribute columns, book reviews, photographs and news articles. Allegro highlights news that directly affects our members - about recent contract negotiations, grievance settlements and organizing campaigns, for example. It presents a wide range of informational articles and also deals with issues that involve the entire Federation.

As part of Local 802's Public Relations Department, Allegro both brings the issues affecting our members to a much wider community, and informs 802 members about the campaigns undertaken by labor and community activists. It helps to mobilize members in support of Local 802's legislative agenda.

A substantial part of its production budget is raised by paid advertising. These ads are a source of useful information about music support services, positions available, etc. Many 802 members advertise services or instruments for sale in the classified ads, or take advantage of the 10 percent members' discount on display ads. For information, contact the advertising manager.

The Office of Public Relations is located on the 5th Floor of Local 802's offices.
