Statement by U.S. Senator Charles Schumer

March 12, 2021

“Over the past year, all New Yorkers have felt hardship, but few have faced the challenges of musicians.

“Last week, I made sure the massive $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan Act delivered for Local 802 AFM members. We delivered pension reform. We delivered 100% COBRA coverage. We delivered extended and expanded Pandemic Unemployment Insurance. We delivered a new round of $1400 stimulus checks. We delivered vaccine supply expansion. And we delivered more money for Save Our Stages. And we are helping cut child poverty in half with our transformative expansion of the childhood tax credit and earned income tax credit.

“Workers, like those in AFM played by the rules and paid into pensions that, through no fault of their own, were at risk. I refused to budge on allocating billions of dollars to save union pension plans like AFM’s, ensuring that promises made to workers could be kept in difficult times. I pushed to fully fund the extension of COBRA benefits through the fall, helping thousands with healthcare in the midst of the pandemic. We made sure unemployment benefits helped out freelancers. And we accelerated roll out for the $15 billion I secured in December with the Save Our Stages Act to help struggling venues of all sizes survive.

“When we fight together, we win. I thank you — and your wonderful president, Adam Krauthamer — for your resilience and courage. I will continue working with everything I have to live up to the responsibility you have given me.”
