Summertrios Establishes Scholarship In Memory of Richard Simon

Volume CII, No. 9September, 2002

A scholarship in the memory of violinist Richard Simon, who served on both the Executive and Trial boards of Local 802, has been established at Summertrios, a chamber music program for amateur and professional musicians that he worked with for a number of years.

Mr. Simon was a Summertrios faculty member in 1991, and again in 1998-2001. He joined the faculty to coach amateur participants, and worked with dozens over several years. “Many said they had never had coaching like his,” said Lily Friedman, the program’s music director. “He also put much time and effort into helping the young professionals on our staff. Many of them later became his students, and he had significant success in helping them upgrade their playing and their careers.”

Establishing a Richard Simon Scholarship will “keep his memory alive in our community,” Friedman said. It would be used to help student violinists and violists, by providing at least one full scholarship yearly for a one-week intensive workshop at Summertrios.
