‘Why we joined the union’

Julie Lawrence

I joined Local 802 to connect with other like-minded musicians in New York and contribute to the thriving arts scene here. I’ll be graduating with my DMA soon, so now is a good time to join. My passion is playing orchestral music, both the standard repertoire and contemporary works. My musical goal is to get more involved in the orchestral and Broadway scenes. One of my favorite recent performances was premiering a sonata written by composer Kyle Werner, who dedicated the work to pianist Sohyun Ahn and me. It was exhilarating to work directly with the composer and to be the very first to interpret this work. As a violinist, I focus on orchestral and chamber music. I enjoy working with living composers and have premiered a number of solo and chamber works for colleagues and peers while I was at Manhattan School of Music. I’ve also started exploring baroque violin in recent years.
