‘Why we joined the union’

Volume 118, No. 10October, 2018

I recently finished a two-year run in “School of Rock” on Broadway, where I played guitar and drums. While most kids in the show were more interested in joining Actors’ Equity, I was excited to join the musicians’ union because I hope to work more playing music. I am especially interested in playing in the pits of other shows like “School of Rock,” where the music has a rock feel. I would also love to do studio or session work with excellent players, or live performances with like-minded people. Some of my favorite gigs in the past year involved playing bass with my L.A. band DETOURE at the Iridium and opening for the band Missing Persons at the Whiskey nightclub. I also enjoyed playing a benefit concert for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS with my former Broadway castmates and playing drums on the Young Guns stage at the Dallas International Guitar Festival. On the teaching side, I teach beginner guitar to kids in my neighborhood. Playing music makes me feel like a part of something larger than myself, and it brings me so much joy.
