Broadway musicians’ outdoor music series is expanded

Out of the Pit

Volume 117, No. 7July, 2017

David Fernandez and Paul Livant

We’re a hit! The Local 802 Musician Referral Service is happy to announce that Broadway Buskers: Out of the Pit has been extended. This outdoor music series, which is a partnership between the Times Square Alliance and Local 802, will continue on a weekly basis throughout the summer and into early autumn, featuring Broadway musicians in three different locations in Times Square’s new pedestrian plazas. Multiple performers – who are paid under a union contract – will be spotlighted weekly, until cold weather sends musicians with delicate instruments indoors. The TSA’s contract with Local 802 now extends through December.

The program has also expanded. Now there are even more opportunities for Broadway musicians to participate. The music series is now open to applications from duo acts, making the program accessible to a wider variety of pit players. Soloists and duo acts will be alternated throughout the summer, with as many as three scheduled every week.

To participate, you must be a Local 802 member who has performed as a Broadway show chair holder or sub within the last two years. Applications may be downloaded at www.local802afm.org/referral. Hard copies are also available at the Musician Referral desk. Or for an application to be e-mailed to you, send a message to the Referral Service. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the summer.

Fantastic performances are already taking place. In May and early June, the Broadway players who made a splash in the new pedestrian plazas included Jen Herman, Adam Kolker, Natalie Hall, Boo Reiners, David Fernandez & Paul Livant, and Ron Jackson.

As Allegro went to press, the next performers scheduled were David Calhoun & Laura Bontrager, Bill Todd, Mary Knapp and Dillon Kondor.

With continued interest and participation from our Broadway musicians, Local 802 and the Musician Referral Service anticipate great success for the Times Square Alliance’s music series. We look forward to this extended partnership with the Alliance, and are excited to offer expanded opportunities for a wider variety of musical performances.
