Local 802 helped sponsor the 100th anniversary of Count Basie’s birth with a concert by the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra in Bryant Park in August. Featured were Sam Burtis (trombone), Billy Drewes (sax, flute and clarinet), Earl Gardner (trumpet), Dennis Irwin (bass), Jason Jackson (trombone), Ralph Lalama (sax, flute and clarinet), John Mosca (trombone), Joe Mosello (trumpet and flugelhorn), Richard Oatts (reeds), Theodore Rosenthal (keyboard), Jeremy Pelt (trumpet and flugelhorn), Richard Perry (sax),Douglas Purviance (trombone), John Riley (drums), Gary Smulyan (bari sax), Jerry Van Campen and Scott Wendholt (trumpet and flugelhorn).
