A tribute to James Sedlar

James Sedlar, 96, a trumpeter and a member of Local 802 since 1956, died on Feb. 5, 2025. According to his biography at Discogs, Mr. Sedlar was originally from Calumet, Michigan and was a high-school hockey and football star turned big-band trumpeter. In the 1950’s, he played with the Johnny Long Orchestra, then settled in New York as a session musician, Broadway orchestra player, contractor and bandleader. His solo career included projects on Kapp Records, Dunhill and other labels. He appeared on the Tonight Show, the Barbra Streisand Spectacular and several Jackie Gleason Shows. He collaborated with Jimmy Smith, Ruth Brown, Grant Green, Laura Nyro, Janis Ian and other artists. He is survived by his wife Martha, daughter Barbara, son-in-law David, grandchildren Jonathan and Steven, and great-grandson Monty. In an e-mail to Allegro, Mr. Sedlar’s daughter Barbara said that her father’s life “was filled with music and blessings. We will keep you in our hearts forever.”
