Jazz Mentors held another highly successful and well-attended student jam session on May 22. Students attended from various jazz programs, including Fiorello LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts, SUNY Purchase, the Kaufman Center and NJPAC. The house trio, led by drummer Henry Conerway III, included John Chin (piano) and Jonathan Michelle (bass), with guest Camille Thurman on saxophone and vocals. Students delighted in being able to participate in a jam session in a safe, alcohol-free environment where leading professional jazz players encouraged them to try new things and work on new material. The series, which will continue in the fall, is made possible in part by the New York City Council and Speaker Corey Johnson, and the Council for Living Music.
