Musicians At Work: Carnival On Broadway

Volume CII, No. 10October, 2002

On May 17 and 18, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra joined with Cyro Baptista and his samba group to present “Carnival on Broadway.” The program featured new music by LCJO director Wynton Marsalis, composed to highlight the connections between Brazilian carnival traditions and modern jazz.

Baptista, a percussionist, leads Brazilian and jazz ensembles, and has worked with John Zorn, Marisa Monte, Cassandra Wilson and Caetano Veloso. The concert was part of a program of celebrating Brazilian carnival at Lincoln Center in May, which featured live performances, films and a forum.
