NLRB Orders Union Election For EKCC Teaching Artists

Local 802 Prevails at Labor Board

Volume CII, No. 9September, 2002

As Allegro went to press, Local 802 received a decision and direction of election from the National Labor Relations Board regarding faculty at the Elaine Kaufman Cultural Center who teach in the Lucy Moses School and the Special Music School of America.

The Board ruled in favor of 802’s position that all teachers at the EKCC should be eligible to vote for union representation. The Board rejected all the employer’s arguments to divide the unit or establish a four-hour threshold for eligibility, and will now schedule an election.

The decision comes after a lengthy hearing. Given the Board’s clear vindication of 802’s position, the union hopes the employer will not attempt to further delay an election through appeals.

See June and July/August Allegros for the history of the EKCC campaign or go to “Teaching Artists Unite!” More details on the decision and election will appear in next month’s Allegro.
