Morris Edwards

Morris Edwards, 81, a member of Local 802 since 1957, died on May 27. He played bass and tuba.

Mr. Edwards was born in Curwenville, Penn. He served in the Air Force and earned degrees from Los Angeles City College and CUNY.

Mr. Edwards played with many of the most important names in jazz: Jimmy Witherspoon, Wardell Gray, Dexter Gordon, Nellie Lutcher, Maynard Ferguson, Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Howard Johnson and many others. He also had a three-year gig with Illinois Jacquet.

Mr. Edwards had a role in the movie “The Cotton Club.”

He is survived by his wife Eloise, son Malori, sister Lorraine Preston and niece Terrian Preston.

A memorial service will be held at St. Peter’s Church at 54th Street and Lexington on Sunday, July 1 at 7:30 p.m.

Abe Rosen

Abe Rosen, 91, died on May 30. Mr. Rosen was a harpist who joined Local 802 in 1936. He had previously served on the Local 802 Executive Board and, at the time of his death, was the union’s delegate to the United Hebrew Trades. Mr. Rosen’s family is preparing an obituary that will appear in a future issue.
