Allegro

Why did you join the union?

Volume CIX, No. 4April, 2009

From time to time, as space permits, Allegro will spotlight some new or readmitted members.

I’m primarily a jazz drummer. My reasons for joining Local 802 are the same as my musical goals in New York City: to create music with the world’s greatest musicians.

Jimmy Alexander

My musical goal in New York City is to be a bass trombone soloist. I rejoined Local 802 to help me meet other great musicians.

Tony Giles

I am a composer, arranger and orchestrator. I joined Local 802 in order to collaborate with the Empire State’s finest instrumentalists and vocalists in the place where America’s great musical traditions of symphony, Broadway and Jazz come together as nowhere else on earth: New York City!

Tom Myron

I joined Local 802 in order to sub for Broadway and Off Broadway shows. My goal is to continue to grow as an artist by immersing myself in the rich musical culture of New York City, meet and collaborate with like-minded musicians, and to be an esteemed musical director. I am a pianist and conductor.

Todd Olson

I joined Local 802 so that other musicians would have my contact information available, so that I can stay up to date with information published in the International Musician and Allegro, and so that I can perform in ensembles that require union membership. My musical goal in New York City is to work as a freelance trumpeter.

Ben Hankle

I joined Local 802 to be part of the best community of serious musicians this world has to offer! My instruments are congas, timbales, bongos, mallet keyboards and voice. My experience in performing diverse genres, from classical, jazz, latin, pop, rock, reggae, and everything in between, makes me a versatile and open-minded musician. I’m equally skilled for recording sessions and live performances. Being part of a Broadway pit ensemble is one of my goals too. In addition to my practical experience I also have formal training with bachelor’s and master’s degrees, both in performance and composition.

David Freyre

I re-joined Local 802 because I believe that the union represents and protects the needs of the professional musician. My musical goal in New York City and beyond is to be an in-demand session musician and producer which I’m feverishly working towards. I’m currently working with British singer Adele; I was recommended by a musician booking agency. I play keyboards and piano.

Miles Robertson

I joined Local 802 because I’m excited to live in a city with an active, strong, relevant union. I won’t mention where I’ve lived before, but needless to say, the union was a tired horse, at best. My goal is to play as much as I can with as many musicians as I can. I’m a trombonist.

Nate Sutton

I joined Local 802 because of my sense of commitment to democracy and solidarity. I have started to become a bandleader and I feel that unions facilitate a worker-friendly atmosphere. My goals are to play bigger venues and to be able to hire competent and professional musicians. I got my gig by playing my original material for Motema Music. I am finishing an album and want to play in union venues. My principal instrument is guitar and voice, but I also play bass, mandolin, and can arrange for horns in small ensembles.
