‘Why we joined the union’
Volume 116, No. 11November, 2016
I joined Local 802 so I could be connected to other musicians and find people who need a pianist, composer and arranger. Before I moved to NYC, I lived back and forth between Korea and the Netherlands for eight years, performing at festivals and venues, teaching at the college level, and recording a few albums as a side musician and arranger. But I always wanted to pursue a music career in New York, so I came to NYC in 2011 and earned my master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music. Now I’ve had many great chances to collaborate with musicians at jazz clubs, restaurants and private events. My most recent favorite gig was playing at Rockwood Music Hall with Jayne Wilcox. (I recorded on her EP album last August.) My principal instrument is piano, and I play in many styles including jazz, classical, pop, R&B and blues.
