‘Why we joined the union’

Volume 118, No. 4April, 2018

Lewis Porter

I’m a jazz pianist, keyboardist, composer, jazz author and educator. I grew up in the Bronx and have many, many connections with Local 802. I am friends with probably hundreds of members. I conducted a workshop at Local 802 with Janet Lawson, Billy Harper and Jazzmeia Horn. I’ve attended holiday parties, rehearsals, panels and jams at the union. I even remember when Local 802 had a weekly open-house job fair on the floor of the Roseland Ballroom. Local 802’s own Principal Jazz Rep Todd Weeks earned his master’s in jazz with me. Now that I’m back to teaching at the New School (which requires Local 802 membership), I’m happy to  make my union association official. I have a heavy schedule of upcoming performances and recently recorded an album with Terri Lyne Carrington, John Patitucci and Tia Fuller. I’m looking forward to interacting with my many friends at 802. There is nothing like the NYC music community!
