A.I. Legislative Update (June 2026)

Volume 126, No. 6June, 2026

As Allegro goes to press, two legislative efforts to regulate A.I. were on the front burner:

PROTECT WORKING MUSICIANS ACT: The Protect Working Musicians Act “would allow independent artists to collectively negotiate with platforms, demanding fair compensation for their work.” AFM President Tino Gagliardi said: “The Protect Working Musicians Act is an essential part of any meaningful attempt to regulate streaming and machine learning. Multinational corporations must not be allowed to use antitrust law to seek refuge from the collective voice of independent artists. When working musicians have a seat at the table, everyone benefits.” Click here to support the act.

NO FAKES ACT: The No Fakes Act is a bipartisan bill that would protect the voice and visual likeness of all individuals from unauthorized computer-generated recreations from generative A.I. and other tech. The Human Artistry Campaign (to which the AFM belongs) said: “As A.I. tools rapidly advance, highly realistic voice clones and digital likenesses are becoming easier to create and harder to detect, creating real risks for artists, performers, actors, authors and everyday Americans alike. The NO FAKES Act responds to that reality with a national framework grounded in consent, accountability and responsible innovation – something creative communities, policymakers, advocacy organizations and even tech leaders believe is an urgent need.” Click here to support the act.
